Broad desert valley under a low range
A broad desert valley with a low range behind, a line of trees along the middle distance and open ground running to the viewer under heavy cloud.
Three registers — sky, range, floor — with the sky taking the upper third. The range runs level the full width and the tree line beneath it is unbroken; nothing rises above the horizon.
Cerulean breaking through lilac and dove cloud, over a range of mauve and rust. The tree line is sap green and the floor runs tan, ochre and olive with scattered flecks of crimson.
The sky is washed wet and allowed to granulate, and the range is dropped into it damp so the edge softens. The foreground is stamped in short separate touches over a dry ground, each left distinct.
Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, with unpainted margins on all four sides.
