Seascapes, Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

Subject

A crowded beach backed by a power station, its twin stacks and cooling towers rising behind the trees, with surf running in along the left.

Composition

The shoreline cuts diagonally from the lower left to the right edge and the crowd is strung along it. The industrial skyline runs level across the upper third and is the only architecture in the picture.

Palette

Violet and lilac in the sky, teal and cobalt in the sea, with the beach in warm apricot. The stacks carry two bands of vermilion — the sharpest colour in the picture and the only hard edges.

Handling

The crowd is hundreds of single marks, diminishing in size with no change of method. The surf is dragged in broken white strokes and the sand is laid in long flat pulls beneath it.

Medium and support

Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, with a white margin round the painted area and a visible deckle at the left.

Signature

Lower left, raypatrick, in red over the sand, letters touching.
