Subject

A pier building seen from the deck, its railings running away to the right, with the beach below at the right and a thin line of figures at the far end.

Composition

The railing makes a long diagonal from the lower left to the centre right and carries the eye to the horizon; the building stands square against it at the left. The beach fills the lower right as a flat wedge.

Palette

Pale cerulean and cream through the sky with warm grey cloud bars, against a building of dove and taupe. The sand is a strong ochre and the shadows across the deck are a cold violet-blue.

Handling

Transparent washes laid and allowed to dry before the next, so every plane has a hard edge. The railings and their shadows are single drawn strokes of the brush point over finished paint.

Medium and support

Watercolour on paper, 5 × 7 in. — read off the Fabriano block beneath it. Transparent throughout, the lights reserved as bare paper.

Signature

Lower right, raypatrick, in dark brown over the sand, letters touching.
