Landscapes, Architecture, Sunsets — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A narrow street between beach houses running down to the sea at sunset, with lit windows on the left and the sun already on the horizon.
The houses close both sides and lean inward, leaving a tall wedge of lit sky and sea at the centre — the one bright passage, and where everything points. The street falls away from the bottom edge.
Violet and indigo through the buildings, which carry almost no local colour at all. The sky runs cadmium yellow and orange at the horizon through to slate above; two lit windows are amber.
The darks are laid as flat masses with the window lights cut into them as single strokes of unmixed orange. The sky is worked wet-in-wet so the colour graduates rather than steps.
Gouache on paper, 5 × 7 in. — read off the Fabriano block beneath. Matte and opaque, with a deckle edge all round.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in green over the street, letters widely spaced.
