Landscapes, Seascapes, Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A beach town seen end-on from out over the water, the whole strand compressed into a single band of rooftops with hills behind and the sea in the foreground.
Four flat horizontals — sea, sand, town, hills — stacked with no vertical anywhere. The town band is the busiest and sits just above centre; everything above and below it is deliberately empty.
A cool grey-blue sky over violet hills, with the town in cream, coral and sage. The sand is a warm apricot and the sea a deep teal — the two strongest colours, placed at opposite ends.
The town is built from dozens of small flat strokes laid side by side, each a building, with no drawing beneath. The sea and sand are dragged in long horizontals so the paper's tooth breaks the colour.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, with a deckle edge on all four sides and a wide white margin.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in cream over the sea, letters widely spaced.
