Landscapes, Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A hotel pool at night between high buildings, the water lit from beneath and a long illuminated bar running down the right side with figures along it.
The pool opens from the bottom edge toward the upper right and the lit bar runs parallel to it, so the whole picture is built on two converging diagonals meeting at the far corner. The left side is kept dark and almost empty.
Turquoise and jade in the lit water against slate and indigo in the towers. The bar is amber and ochre — the only warm passage, and it is reflected in the pool as broken verticals.
The water is laid in flat planes of two or three blues with its reflections struck in afterwards as short vertical strokes. The figures along the bar are single dark marks, barely more than dashes.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, with a white margin round the painted area.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in orange over the pool, letters widely spaced.
