Landscapes, Architecture — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A palm standing in a narrow gap between two buildings, seen looking up, with a lit yellow wall at the right and a shadowed brown one at the left.
Upright and built as a funnel: the two walls lean in from the edges and the sky is a tall wedge between them. The palm runs the full height of that wedge and its trunk is the picture's one true vertical.
Cadmium yellow on the lit wall against umber and plum in the shadowed one — a warm-against-warm contrast with no cool colour but the sky. The palm crown is emerald; the sky cobalt with lilac cloud.
Flat opaque planes with square ends, the architecture laid once and left. The fronds are struck out from the crown as individual loaded strokes, and the railings drawn last over dry paint.
Gouache and watercolour on paper, over a ruled pencil border, on a blue sheet. Photographed on the studio table.
Lower left, raypatrick, in black over the shadow, letters touching.
