Landscapes, Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

Downtown towers seen from street level, one glass tower lit between two in shadow, with a yellow cab crossing the foreground and a sculpture at the base.
Upright and compressed: three buildings fill almost the whole sheet and the sky is reduced to a sliver at the top. The lit tower runs the full height just right of centre, and the street is a shallow wedge at the base.
Violet and plum in the shadowed facades against cobalt and bone in the lit glass, with a dark red-brown block at the right. The cab is cadmium yellow and is the only saturated warm note.
The facades are built from rows of short horizontal dashes that read as storeys without a single window being drawn. The reflections in the left tower are laid as broken diagonal strokes over the blue.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, with a white margin round the painted area. Photographed beside the pan palette it was mixed in.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the pavement, letters widely spaced.
