Landscapes, Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A crowded pool deck above a marina, with swimmers in the water, sunbathers ranked along both sides, and masts filling the distance behind.
Seen from above and to one side, so the pool sits as a pale rectangle on the diagonal with figures packed around all four edges. Two children stand in the near foreground, the largest figures in the picture, and give the scale.
Warm sand and cream through the decking against jade and turquoise water. The crowd carries small hot notes — coral, orange, crimson — scattered evenly so no one of them dominates.
Every figure is two or three loaded strokes with no outline and no face, and the crowd is built from their repetition at diminishing size. The umbrella at the right is the thickest paint in the picture, scraped on with the knife.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, with a white margin round the painted area. Photographed with the palette knife used on it.
Lower left, raypatrick, in red over the decking, letters widely spaced and partly cut by the edge.
