Landscapes, Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

Rooftops stepping down toward the sea, with three dark trees standing among them and a headland running across the far water.
Horizontal and layered: roofs in the lower half, sea across the upper third, headland along the top. The three trees are the only verticals and they are spaced unevenly so they do not read as a row.
Cobalt and ultramarine through the water, laid in bands of slightly different value, against roofs of coral, cream and lilac. The trees are a deep olive; one red garage door is the hottest note in the picture.
Flat opaque planes with square-ended strokes, each roof and wall a single decision. The sea is a weave of short horizontal marks in several blues, which is what keeps it from reading as flat.
Gouache on paper. Matte and fully opaque, the pale roofs sitting solid over the darker ground. A white margin shows along the lower edge.
Lower left, raypatrick, in red-brown over the grass, letters touching.
