Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A hotel pool seen from a balcony above, umbrellas and loungers ranked around it, with tall palms at the left and the sea beyond the far wall.
Seen from high and to one side, so the pool sits as a bright turquoise lozenge in the middle distance and the terrace opens toward the bottom corners. The palms rise through the left third and break the horizontal.
A clean cerulean sky over a sea of pale blue, with the pool in turquoise and jade. The terrace is warm taupe and ochre; the umbrellas carry small notes of emerald and cobalt.
Thick and square, the pool laid as one flat plane with its lane markings cut in as single strokes. The figures and parasols are two or three marks each, dropped onto finished paint.
Oil on canvas board. Moderately loaded with the weave reading through the sky; photographed on the studio desk.
Lower right, raypatrick, in cream over the terrace, letters touching.
