Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A hotel pool seen from above, its deck lined with loungers and cabanas, with the hotel's W sign on the tower behind and the city beyond.
The pool runs diagonally from the lower left to the centre right as a long turquoise rectangle, and the crowd is ranked along both its sides. The buildings rise behind it and close the top third.
Turquoise and jade in the water against buildings of cream, bone and pale green. The W sign is a block of vermilion — the only hot note above the waterline — and the loungers carry small flecks of orange and blue.
Every figure is one or two loaded strokes with no outline. The pool is laid flat and its reflections struck in afterwards as short broken verticals; the palms are quick dark trunks with dabbed crowns.
Gouache on paper — the tubes are in the photograph. Matte and opaque, with a white margin and the title pencilled below.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the pool. Below the image, in pencil: W Hotel Hollywood.
