Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

The pool at the Roosevelt Hotel seen from above, swimmers scattered across the green water and a crowd packed along both long sides under palms and a high white building.
The pool sits as a pale rectangle on a slight diagonal and fills the lower two thirds; the crowd rings it on three sides and the architecture closes the top. Every figure is small and none is a focal point.
Jade and turquoise in the water against decking in cobalt and plum. The crowd carries dozens of small flesh and coral notes; the palms and the building above are emerald and bone.
Flat opaque planes with square ends — each bather two or three strokes with no outline and no face, and the crowd built from their repetition at diminishing size.
Gouache on paper, with the title pencilled below. Photographed on the studio table.
