Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A hotel pool in the early part of the day, nearly empty, with a single figure walking the tiled deck and palms rising behind the umbrellas.
The pool sits as a bright turquoise shape across the middle and the tiled deck opens toward the viewer in a wide chequered plane. The figure is small, alone and placed on the far side, which makes the empty foreground the subject.
Turquoise and jade in the water against a deck of plum, aubergine and warm grey — the same bold ground decision as the West Hollywood pool. The sky is a pale cream-green, the palms a dusty olive.
The deck is laid as a grid of flat squares, each one a single stroke of a slightly different violet, so the floor shimmers without being drawn. The swimmers are single marks; the loungers two strokes each.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, with a white margin round the painted area. Photographed above the palette it was mixed on.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in cobalt over the deck, letters widely spaced.
