Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A hillside hotel pool seen from above, with swimmers in the water, ranks of loungers and umbrellas on both sides, and the town falling away behind.
The pool sits as a bright blue rectangle slightly left of centre and the loungers run away from it in two converging lines. The hillside behind rises to the top edge and compresses the distance.
Turquoise and cerulean in the water against sap green and olive on the hill. The loungers at the right are a strong cadmium orange — the only hot passage, and placed opposite the figures.
Flat opaque planes throughout, the loungers single strokes laid in rows, the figures two marks each with no outline. The hillside is dabbed in short broken touches so it stays busy without detail.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque; a white margin runs along the lower edge. Photographed with the palette knife used to mix it.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in dark grey over the decking, letters widely spaced.
