Fashion, Architecture — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A hotel pool packed with bathers, seen from the deck at eye level, with loungers in the near foreground, a glass tower above and hills beyond.
The pool runs diagonally away to the right and the crowd fills it; the near figures are cropped by the bottom edge and are much larger than the rest, which does all the work of depth.
Jade and turquoise in the water against cream and mint on the building. The crowd carries small hot notes — a coral hat, an orange shirt — scattered evenly across the whole picture.
Every figure is two or three loaded strokes with no outline and no face, built up until the crowd reads as a mass. The water is a weave of short horizontal marks over a flat ground.
Gouache on paper — the tube of Pébéo Studio Gouache is in the photograph. Matte and opaque, with a white margin and the title pencilled below.
Right of centre, raypatrick, in white over the building. Below the painted area, in pencil: Loews Hollywood Hotel.
