Animals — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A koi seen close and head-on, its mouth open at the surface, drawn in ink and washed in orange, cream and violet against teal water.
The fish fills the whole sheet on a diagonal and is cropped at the tail; the violet dorsal fin breaks out of the ruled panel at the top. The eye sits almost exactly at the centre.
Cadmium orange and vermilion along the back against a cream and sage head, with the fin in plum and lilac. The water is teal and viridian and is painted round the fish rather than under it.
Pen first and wash after, with the scales drawn as rows of small hatched marks over dry colour. The ground is flooded last and allowed to granulate at its edges.
Watercolour with pen and ink in a spiral-bound sketchbook.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
