Animals — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Nine bulldog heads crowded across a sketchbook page, several in small blue hats, grinning and lolling in every direction.
The heads fill the page corner to corner at different scales and angles with no ground and no setting, overlapping so that the sheet reads as a crowd pressing forward.
Ochre, tan and cream in the dogs against a ground flooded in teal, cobalt and plum. The tongues are cadmium orange and coral and the hats a hard ultramarine.
Pen line first, fast and unbroken, with the colour dropped inside it and allowed to run past the drawing. The ground is flooded round the heads afterwards and left to granulate.
Watercolour with pen and ink in a spiral-bound sketchbook.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
