Landscapes, Animals — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Around fifteen watercolour sheets laid out on a workbench — cloud studies over open range, three banded sunsets, a rider on horseback, a lake shore and a figure on a porch.
The sheets are ranked in rows across the bench and read as a working layout rather than a composition. Almost every landscape puts the horizon in the lower third and gives the rest to weather.
The group divides sharply: the cloud studies are cobalt, dove and sage, while the three sunsets in the middle row are scarlet, magenta and cadmium orange. Nothing sits between the two.
Opaque and quick, the cloud laid in flat strokes with hard edges and the sunsets flooded band on band. The riders are a few loaded touches with no drawing beneath them.
Watercolour and gouache on paper, around fifteen works. A studio photograph of a body of work laid out on the bench, not a single picture.
Along the lower edge of several sheets, raypatrick, in small spaced letters.
