Landscapes, Animals, Architecture — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Five watercolour studies on a sketchbook page — a triumphal arch lit at night, a fishing boat below a green mountain, and three studies of riders on horseback in open country.
The studies are ruled in two rows, the arch upright at the left and the rest horizontals. The three riders are the same subject worked three ways — near, middle and against the sky — so the page reads as a sequence.
The arch is ochre and gold against a deep indigo night — the darkest study on the page. The riders are sienna and umber against sage, olive and lilac ground; the boat study is green and slate.
Washed first and drawn into afterwards with the point of the brush, the horses built from a few modelled strokes with the legs put in last. The arch is painted round, its lit stone left as reserved paper.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, five studies on one page, dated. A studio photograph of a page with the brushes used, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
